I am the Myositis Warrior. I represent the rare disease community, and Myositis is a chronic, debilitating disease no one has ever heard of or can't pronounce. And believe me, it takes a superhero to try to get through most days with this villain taking over my body. At age 66, I decided last year to embody the spirit of he Myositis Warrior in costume form, and I attended Comic-Con for the very first time. Even though I rented a scooter, it was an exhausting but exhilarating experience. And I felt empowered by the superhero spirit around me.
I am interested in talking to people about the lack of people with disabilities featured in comics and in YA graphic novels. I would like to advocate and explore with people interested in this area. People with any disease, but especially rare ones no one has ever herd about, are superheroes every day, just to get through their life. So in reality, I know more superheroes, some on a personal level, than anyone else. If there is anyone who would like to explore an idea for a graphic novel, especially an author, I would love to talk to them. I hope I have a Con artist friend of mine on board, could use more of course, but I'm looking for authors interested in representing the disability crowd as superheroes--especially the young ones. Please contact me if you are are the droid I'm looking for.
