Sarah Avery
Writer
Maryland
My first book, Tales from Rugosa Coven, won the 2015 Mythopoeic Fantasy Award... and immediately went out of print when the small press that published it went under. Thank goodness, the rights got reverted. Surprisingly, even that was not as crazymaking as when my literary agent left publishing to become a fine art blacksmith. No, seriously, he did. My short fiction has appeared in Space and Time Magazine, Fantasy Scroll, Jim Baen's Universe, and Black Gate. My most recent book, by the grace of my Kickstarter backers, is a novella, The Imlen Brat, and it features some gorgeous interior illustrations by Kate Baylay. Even during the pandemic, with another round of homeschooling to look forward to, I'm working on new fiction. A local arts grant is funding my next publishing project, getting my short fiction backlist into properly produced ebooks and, if I can crowdfund just a little bit more, audiobooks. I can hardly believe the good fortune that allows (and may legally obligate) me to end my bio with this sentence: Sarah Avery is supported in part by funding from the Montgomery County Government and the Arts & Humanities Council of Montgomery County.
